Mizuno Wave Rider 30: three decades of innovation for the most iconic daily trainer

8 July 2026

There are models that go through the seasons and others that, over time, become part of the history of running. Mizuno Wave Rider belongs to this second category. Born in 1997, the shoe has become one of the iconic models of the Japanese brand: a reliable, recognizable trainer capable of speaking to different generations of runners without losing its identity. With the new Mizuno Wave Rider 30, the brand celebrates three decades of evolution and introduces a deeply updated version, designed to make daily running smoother, softer, and more stable. The key concept of the launch is “Ride the Next Wave”, a synthesis of the new design philosophy: to accompany the runner in the everyday kilometers with greater comfort, protection, and naturalness.

A daily trainer for daily training

The Wave Rider 30 is not born as an extreme shoe or a racing model. Its identity remains that of a neutral daily trainer, designed for the real routine of runners: road workouts, regular outings, daily kilometers, and sessions where reliability, stability, and comfort are needed. The European launch took place in Hamburg, where Mizuno presented the new Rider 30 to media, content creators, and the international community, alternating moments of technical insights and field testing.

Mizuno Enerzy NXT midsole: more softness and stability

The main technical innovation of the Mizuno Wave Rider 30 concerns the midsole. The model introduces a double-layer construction in Mizuno Enerzy NXT: in the upper part a nitrogen-infused compound, designed to offer a softer, more elastic, and comfortable feeling; in the lower part an EVA-based version, designed to provide balance and stability to the platform. The result is a shoe with a more modern feel, but without becoming unstable or exaggerated. Mizuno maintains the Rider’s DNA: cushioning, stability, and transition remain the three central axes of the project.

Full-length Wave Plate: smoother transition

Another key element is the new full-length Mizuno Wave Plate. For the first time in the history of the Wave Rider series, the model adopts a full-length plate, not designed to stiffen the shoe for racing, but to better guide the roll and promote a more stable and continuous transition. The Wave Plate works as an internal support structure: it accompanies the movement, supports the landing, and helps maintain the integrity of the midsole during the run.

More base support, same weight

Compared to the Wave Rider 29, the new version features a wider midfoot base, with 14 mm more support. This is an important update because it allows for increased stability without affecting the overall weight. The shoe remains light for the category: 265 grams in the men’s/unisex version and 230 grams in the women’s version. The stack height is 42.5 mm at the heel and 34.5 mm at the forefoot, with a drop of 8 mm.

Engineered mesh upper and more protective fit

The upper has also been updated. The new engineered mesh focuses on breathability, lightness, and comfort, while the integrated tongue and the enveloping heel contribute to a more protective and secure fit. The goal is to make the shoe more welcoming from the first use, with less perceived rigidity and a greater sense of protection even on longer outings.

It is a suitable choice for those who want a protective, stable, and smooth trainer, capable of accompanying both slow outings and more continuous road work.
